We live our lives. We function. Wake up the same time every day and complete a hectic schedule, always trying to get in a little more...of whatever. And, sooner or later, most of us have that "wake up moment", an awakening that changes our perspective and maybe even direction. The awakening can be initiated in many ways and manifest itself in myriad forms. For me, this awakening is a recognition that I've not used my gifts and experiences to benefit the people around me, and just as importantly, people in other places...other lands and cultures.
I've been involved in homebuilding, construction, developing, and real estate since the 1970's in just about every facet of those businesses. Luck has lead my way and allowed me the good fortune to have learned from and with some extraordinary mentors and leaders over the years. And I've been blessed to have the support and comfort of family and friends. But, in retrospect, most of what I've accomplished has been more about selfishness and greed than for the good of family, friends, business, community and country. And so, my eyes are now opened a bit wider and the peripheral vision is far greater. I want to use what skills I have in a more macro environment.
Having been raised in a great family with a career Naval Officer as a Dad, and a brilliant and loving Mom, I've witnessed commitment in its truest form. My Dad fought in three wars and put his life on the line for his country without ever showing doubt or fear. He inspired me to follow, and I joined the U.S. Marine Corps infantry to do the same. My Mom gave herself to the three of us, my sister, my brother and me. How she accomplished everything she did is still a mystery.
And now, as a father of two incredible daughters, and husband to a great wife, I understand a depth of love and commitment that only a parent and spouse can feel. I "owe" for these gifts and will embark on a journey of discovery of ways to give "all" of what I have to provide for my family, my friends, my community, my country, and to spread my commitment across all boundaries.
I envision learning more about many things. I want to understand the cultures of Asia and acquire the special strength of family that is embodied in their lives. I will strive to improve my work ethic and to be honest and honorable in every relationship. We should all strive to give all tasks our absolute best effort, every time, every day and to never be satisfied until.....we truly are.
